Come Home.

I'm finally done with school work!

One more exam paper to conquer
And I'm ready to soar the skies of fun and countless get-togethers.

Last night,
In the midst of it all,
I stole an hour away to watch Art Central's Taboo.

The episode led me on a journey to three continents of the world,
Where family structures are built totally out of the box.

[1] One of the tribes in China

Nobody lives with his/her father.
Yes, no child grows up with a daddy because over here,
Daddys only stayover with mummys
And leave at the break of dawn.

Married people live apart
And only meet once or twice a week for a sleepover -
And that's really it.
There is no divorce,
Only seperation - a norm in this community.

Children hardly have any communication with their fathers.
They are raised by their mothers and grannies,
Whom occassionally receive allowances from the men to feed the young.

Girls are considered women at the age of 13,
When they participate a village-wide event
To be 'picked-up' by boys interested in them.
And when they're hooked up upon the acceptance of the girl's mother (yea, daddy's not home),
The entire vicious cycle repeats.

I feel very sad for the people here.
How can anyone grow up well without a father-figure?
Without the head of the house taking the lead,
The families in this tribe
Are like headless bodies - blind and directionless.

[2] Cape Town, Africa

You hardly find any family whole.
Broken windows everywhere.
Rage rules the air.
Helpless women, children and youth lie vulnerable to the darkness of this wilderness.
With 50% of them unemployed,
Theft and robbery crowd the streets.
Kids don't depend on their dads.
'Cos hardly any come home anyway.

The families that are deemed most whole in Cape Town
Are gangs,
Each with a Chief
Whom they call their 'Father'.
Once blood is shed to seal their identities in the gangs,
The members officially forsake their biological families
And pledge their lives and souls to the 'Father'.

The kids find purpose and vision
In belonging to these gangs.
They discover the joy of pleasing and serving a 'Father' who would do anything to
Protect them.
Punishment for any mistakes committed
Is considered pleasure
To the sons of a 'Father'
Whom they can call their own.

[3] The Himalayas, India

To control population and maximise the ownership of land,
Brothers share one wife.

The husbands keep to a roster that regulates
When they spend the night with their wife.

The children the women bear are never distinguished to belong to whom.
Every child is every husband's.

One of them said,
'With more men in a family,
Responsibilities are highly reduced.
A man doesn't have to shoulder everything alone.'

Oh,
What do you have to say about this?

*

Daddy,
Only you can make
Everyone whole.

Insanity binds ignorance.
Only Truth can set people free.
